Your identity, your security

On what is your identity based?  What makes you you?  Are you listening to our culture's definition of what and who is important?

If the devil can get you at the root, the core, your very identity, all else in your life will follow suit - be messed up, confusing, and just not right.  But the sad fact is that these things may "feel" or appear alright when deep down they are most certainly not.

Identity is found in so many ways.  The world's ways are superficial and temporary.  They either crumble quickly or may take awhile to disintegrate, but crumble they will.  The hard part is to see them for what they are because in and of themselves, they are not bad things.  But when they become as gods in your heart and lives, they have no real substance or sustaining power because they were not meant to bring you true and lasting security and peace.  Only Christ gives us that.

What are these false foundations?  Here are just a few:

looks
prestige
money
job title
gender
possessions
how others treat you
family name
fitting in
knowledge

If these are your sources of security, they are not enough and they never will be.  And your soul knows this on some level.  At best, all of these offer a shallow sense of security.

If you "build" your identity on props that are flimsy and will eventually fade and falter, then you will always feel insecure.  Things may even appear great on the outside.  But when we build our identity on anything or anyone rather than Christ, we are insecure.  It doesn't matter if you're a billionaire or the most famous person on the planet.  Like the old hymn says, "All other ground is sinking sand."

If you are not in Christ, the devil will confuse and deceive you - he wants you to think that you do not need a Savior - that you do not need the Lord in your heart and life.

If you are in Christ, he will get you to doubt who you are in Christ!  He tries to derail us in this way.

The world wants you to build your identity on sinking sand, making those false "foundations" appear more stable than they are.  The enemy does not want you to realize that the only real and lasting foundation - the only one that gives true security and identity - is the Strong Foundation of Christ that is immovable, unshakable, unchanging, permanent, and eternal.

The Holy Spirit in us, testifying to God's truth, how much He loves us, and how secure our earthly and eternal future is in Him - in these things lies our deepest security.

Won't you come along and build on the lasting Foundation of Christ?
