Your purpose never changes
God’s overarching purpose for each of His children is that we know Him.
And what a relief this is!
Yes, we have “assignments” and jobs, etc. But they are not our utmost purpose.
This truth should set you free. No more wondering, worrying, or confusion. As a born again child of the Most High God, your purpose is to get to know Him more deeply each day.
You could be “successful” in worldly pursuits, even in ministry. But if in the process you are not knowing God better, then what’s it all for?
Remember what Jesus told His disciples when they were so excited that the spirits were subject to them? He set them straight right quick!
Jesus told them to instead rejoice that their names were written in heaven.
In other words, don’t rejoice in your good works, even though done in God’s power. Rejoice that you are rightly related to God! Knowing God. Living with Him now and then forevermore in heaven.
Our joy is to be found in Him because that’s where it is! He is joy!
“Joy is the serious business of Heaven.” C.S. Lewis
Why? Because Jesus is there!
In a world filled with bad news everywhere you turn, joy can seem unlikely to maintain let alone have at all. Yet joy is possible when Joy Himself lives in our hearts.
Getting to know God through the study of His Word, worshiping Him, and fellowship with His people is key.
But I have found the number one way to intimacy with God is through obedience to Him.
This is fulfilling your purpose to the max. Spoiler alert: this will include suffering for Him. We get to know others best when we relate to them, go through what they go through. And friends, when we suffer, we are relating to (getting closer to) Jesus. We must remember that He was a man of sorrows. But we can know His joy even in this! It is a truly beautiful way to live our lives.
It helps to remember that we are no longer the of this world. Heaven is our Home.
This truth should thrill us! This broken, disappointing world will be forever transformed when Jesus gets His hands on it! (think Millennial Reign)
Meanwhile, our joy and purpose should be found in our relationship with Him. Don't get hung up on your "goals" too much. They can be a distraction from your truest purpose. Put the horse before the cart!
Keep getting to know the Lover of your soul and life will unfold exactly as it is supposed to, even if it doesn't look the way you think it should. It will be better.
